How to use Home Staging basics to achieve your New Year’s resolutions

These 4 easy steps will help you start your day and have you on your way to a tidier home.

The new year often comes with lofty goals to make improvements on many things including our home and our surroundings. If you’re like me, you read books like Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and get motivated to do an entire home make-over. Then after the holidays, the routine of life sets back in and it’s hard to make the changes we so hoped would keep our house looking presentable to friends and guests.

For those that have sold a home or who currently have their house on the market, you know the importance of getting your house in top shape before you walk out the door for the day. You never know if a realtor will be showing your home that day and if they do, you want to make the best impression possible. If that's the case, then you've got a list of things to do every morning and it can get old really quick. Since that's a short-term situation, you suck it up and do it, but I get that you don't want to do that every day of your life! When you're not in the process of selling your home, then life happens. Routines set in and straitening your home is not always a top priority. Then you might start to feel overwhelmed because it seems that it will never be a priority and you're doomed to live in a messy home. Instead of giving up, I suggest you start by tackling just four areas each morning. Make it a goal to tidy each area before you move on to the next. If you make these easy home staging tips a habit, you can keep major areas of your home tidy on a daily basis.

  • Goal #1: Bed made

First, make your bed. Every day. This simple task, and home staging "must", changes the look and feel of the entire bedroom. Do it as soon as you get up because with our busy lifestyles there’s usually no time to go back to do it later. I'd be willing to bet that once you make this a habit, you'll be more likely to put stray clothes back where they belong too...

  • Goal #2: Tidy bathroom

Second, clean off bathroom counter tops. As soon as you’ve completed your morning routine, waste no time putting toiletries away in cabinets or drawers. Once you've got this down you'll probably want to pair down all those items and just keep the necessities, but just take it one step at a time for now.

  • Goal #3: No dirty dishes

Your next goal is to put away used dishes. No one wants to visit a home with dirty dishes left out and you don’t want to come home to that chore after a long day either. Keep kitchen counters clear of clean dishes that can be stored properly in cabinets or dirty dishes that can be stored in the dishwasher. Once breakfast is completed, put those dishes away!

  • Goal #4: Perfect pillows

Finally, keep couch cushions and pillows arranged nicely - they don't really have to be perfect! At my house, the pillows have usually been moved to the floor by one of my kids and I seem to repeat this step several times throughout the day...sigh. Hopefully for you, you'll only have to do it once. For the most part, the living room will look more put together if the sofa looks put together.

These four steps should literally add only seconds to your morning routine once you’ve made them a habit. You’ll feel the difference when you come home to a house that’s neat (or neater) and tidy (or tidier)! Maybe then you’ll find the time and energy for that entire home make-over!
